How to clean up after flood damage in East Texas.
6/1/2023 (Permalink)
Recent heavy rains flooded this building in Nacogdoches, Texas.
Cleaning up from a flood can seem like a daunting task. Preparing and planning for how you will deal with the damage is essential. Use the following guidelines to return your home to living standards immediately.
Remember, safety should always be the priority in such an event. Although your first impulse may be to start cleaning, you must protect yourself from hazards. The water may have contained sewage or other contaminants, and the structure may be unsafe. Keep in mind that buildings may not be habitable during the cleaning process.
For most insurance claims, before you start cleaning, take plenty of photos or videos and keep records of all expenses.
The cleanup process can take weeks or sometimes even months to complete. A good suggestion is to hire a reputable company like your local SERVPRO.

How Do Fire Sprinklers Work
8/13/2022 (Permalink)
Sprinkler Systems are among the most useful tools in your firefighting arsenal.
Sprinkler Systems are among the most useful tools in your firefighting arsenal. Today’s systems have been shown to reduce deaths and property loss by more than 65 percent.
For this reason, you certainly want fire sprinklers on your commercial property! But how do fire sprinklers work?
Step 1: Fire Sprinklers Detect Heat
Contrary to popular belief, fire sprinklers are not triggered by smoke. It’s an easy mistake to make since heat is carried upward with smoke from a fire. But if smoke was the trigger, simply burning your toast in the office kitchen could be enough to drench the kitchen with water from a fire sprinkler head.
Fire sprinklers work because high heat triggers the sprinkler system. When a blaze ignites, the air directly above it heats rapidly. This hot air rises and spreads along the ceiling. When the air is hot enough and reaches a sprinkler head, it triggers a chain reaction.
Most sprinkler heads feature a glass bulb filled with a glycerin-based liquid. This liquid expands when it comes in contact with air heated to between 135 and 165 degrees. When the liquid expands, it shatters its glass confines and the sprinkler head activates.
Step 2: Fire Sprinklers Douse The Fire
Each sprinkler head is attached to a pipe that connects to a reliable water source outside the building. When heat activates a sprinkler head, a valve opens, allowing pressurized water from the pipe system to flow out.
It’s important for water in a fire sprinkler system to be pressurized. This allows the water to spray outward in an arc to more thoroughly douse the fire and prevent it from reigniting.
Step 3: Fire Sprinklers Minimize Water Damage
In movies, sprinkler systems operate misleadingly, leading many people to believe a fallacy that all the sprinklers in a system are tied together and when one is triggered by heat, they all activate.
If this was the case, putting out a fire would simply be trading fire damage for water damage, and it’s not how fire sprinklers work.
Fortunately, sprinkler heads function individually. Most of the time, fires can be completely extinguished after just one or two sprinklers activate. This allows water damage to be confined to the small area where the fire started. Plus, since fire sprinklers douse fires with about six times less water than a fire hose, their quick action is less damaging to your property than a visit from the fire department.
It is best to have your sprinkler system on regularly scheduled maintenance and keep their contact information available for your entire staff in case of emergencies.
Does my home have a water leak?

Water spots in the ceiling
Do you know how to spot a water leak?
You never expect a water leak in your home, but it’s good to be prepared and know what to do in case it happens! Sometimes, leaks can go undetected due to where they happen in the home (inside walls, under floor, or in your crawlspace). The following tips can help you determine if a leak is present, whether you can see it or not!
- Watch your water bill for unexpectedly high usage. High water usage could be a sign of a problem.
- Use no water for two hours. Read your water meter before and after this period. If this reading is not the same, you likely have a leak somewhere.
- Check your toilet by placing food coloring in the toilet tank. In 15 minutes or less, if the colored water is in the toilet bowl without flushing, there is probably a leak.
- Fix leaks and drips as soon as you see them.
- Use water leak alarms and automatic water shut off systems to catch leaks quickly.
In the event that you have a water leak and need mitigation, call SERVPRO of Lufkin/S. Nacogdoches County! Our highly trained technicians will be happy to help get your home back to its preloss condition.
The Science of Drying Your Lufkin Property
8/8/2022 (Permalink)
SERVPRO uses moisture meters and other testing equipment to verify the moisture content
Do you know the science SERVPRO of Lufkin/S. Nacogdoches County uses to dry out your home or business?
Did you know there is actually a science behind the process of drying? The knowledge of psychrometrics is essential to restoring a water-damaged structure to its preloss condition. While your initial reaction may be to grab a few towels to mop up the mess and place a fan or two around the damaged area, SERVPRO of Lufkin/S. Nacogdoches County Professionals are trained in the science of drying and follow strict industry-approved standards to help lower the chance of any secondary damages. If your business suffers from water damage, your local SERVPRO professionals will:
- Inspect the building to detect every component that is wet, to help prevent secondary damage from happening.
- Measure how much moisture is in wet materials and monitor whether those materials are drying
- Speed up Mother Nature by using professional drying equipment.
What exactly does “speed up Mother Nature” mean? A wet building can often dry naturally because the environment always seeks equilibrium. When materials are wet, moisture will naturally move to drier air at the surface of the material- but only if the air is, indeed, drier. The only problem is, that nature often takes too long, and secondary damages may occur while the building is drying out. For this reason, the professionals at SERVPRO have been trained to use top-of-the-line equipment to help Mother Nature along, including equipment to help dry hardwood floors, tough-to-reach spaces inside walls, and much more. SERVPRO of Lufkin/S. Nacogdoches County also has state-of-the-art monitoring equipment and a proven scientific process to help speed the drying of your home or business.
The bottom line? Your local SERVPRO of Lufkin/S. Nacogdoches County has the training and equipment to help make it “Like it never even happened.” Call us today at 936-559-0404.

A frozen or clogged gutter can cause damage if left unattended.
5/23/2022 (Permalink)
A frozen or clogged gutter can cause damage if left unattended.
It certainly isn't the most fun weekend project, but it's an important one nonetheless. While it's certainly easier to procrastinate cleaning out your gutters, there are a number of problems that can arise from debris building up.
People don't often stop to think of the issues that can arise from clogged gutters, but there are actually many. If water is not able to properly flow away from your house, then damage can result in a number of different locations, from your roofing to your foundation. There is a number of reasons to make sure that your gutters get cleaned out. Here is a look at a few of those reasons.
Roof Damage
When leaves and other debris clog up your gutters to the point that water is flooding over, you can end up having issues with rot on your roofing. This is one of the main reasons that it's important to keep your gutters clean.
Keep Out Pests
Clogged-up gutters can be appealing to a number of critters as a nesting site. From birds to mosquitoes, a bed of damp leaves can be alluring.
Damage to Fascia
The fascia is that board that runs right behind your gutter. Overflowing water can damage this important component of your gutter system.
Each of these areas can cause water to enter your home during heavy rains, snowstorms, or ice storms causing issues that may not be seen for some time.

Is There Hidden Water Damage in Your Nacogdoches Home?

If you notice your home has water damage call the experts at SERVPRO of Lufkin/S. Nacogdoches Today! (936) 559-0404
Flooding is quite common in Texas, but water damage can come from many different places and is not just a problem for people living on the coast. While the damage from a flood is pretty apparent, there are many ways water damage can happen to your home when you don’t even realize it.
Here are some common causes of water damage and how you can spot the warning signs.
Weather is a common cause of water damage. Rains cause flooding that can get into your home from the outside.
Even if it isn’t raining there is still moisture in the air. Damp air can lead to condensation and water damage to your walls. This is especially true of bathrooms and other damp areas of your home that don’t get much airflow.
Appliances like your washing machine, garbage disposal, water heater, toilet, and air conditioner can all contribute to water damage if they leak or stop draining properly.
Water from our pipes and plumbing systems can also cause water damage. Leaks and drips can go on for months, or even years, raising your water bill and doing unseen damage to your home.
So if these are all the ways water can sneak into your home, what are the signs of water damage?
Here are a few warning signs that you have a water damage problem in your home.
Standing water – This may sound pretty obvious, but if you notice water pooling in your house you have a water problem that needs to be taken care of immediately.
Bad smells – While water doesn’t normally have much of a smell, the mold and bacteria that grow in damp environments can give off a distinct musty, wet odor. If you smell mold or mildew you might have a water issue.
Stains and spots – Stains on the ceilings or walls can be a sign of water damage. You might have a leaky pipe or roof. Call SERVPRO of Lufkin/S. Nacogdoches to determine the cause of the problem and to clean up the damage before it becomes a serious mold problem.
Peeling paint – Paint damaged by water will start to peel, bubble, or flake off.
Uneven surfaces – Water damage can cause floors, ceilings, walls, and other surfaces to warp and feel uneven.
Cracks – Water is always seeking the path of least resistance out of your home. Water can enter through cracks and once water finds it’s way in, the crack will expand allowing even more to get into your home. Make sure you seal all visible cracks on your property.
If you notice your home has water damage call the experts at SERVPRO of Lufkin/S. Nacogdoches Today! (936) 559-0404
Can Secondary Water Damage Hurt Your Nacogdoches Home?
8/19/2021 (Permalink)
It’s important to remember that Secondary damage happens as a result of water damage. It can include things such as warped flooring or black mold.
Any time you have water damage in your Nacogdoches home, there’s a strong chance that secondary damage could also pose a risk. From what this damage is to types of damage, including black mold, here are a few things you should know.
1. What It Is
A secondary type of damage is any damage that occurs as a result of damage related to the initial problem. For example, if a pipe breaks the carpet could get soaked. This is a primary damage. However if the soaked carpet is not dried and the sub-floor warps, the damage to the sub-floor would be considered secondary. Secondary damage usually occurs if the initial damage is extremely severe, incorrectly cleaned up, or damage that is not cleaned up in a timely manner.
2. Types of Damage
There are a few types of damage that often fall into the secondary category. These include warped wood, cracking in sheet-rock or plaster, peeling vinyl, cracked tile, water stains, black mold, and high humidity problems as excess water evaporates. If the water damage has created a weakness in the exterior of the home, such as the roof, you may also experience problems from high winds or additional weather.
3. What To Do
If your home has suffered any type of water damage it’s best to contact a water damage restoration service for help with cleanup and repairs. These professionals can act quickly, are trained in the proper cleanup procedures, and have the tools necessary to safely do the job. Correctly handling the situation can help you prevent additional secondary damages.
It’s important to remember that Secondary damage happens as a result of water damage. It can include things such as warped flooring or black mold. If you have water damage it’s important to call a restoration service, and make repairs as quickly as possible. Doing so can help you mitigate additional damages to your home.
How Does SERVPRO of Lufkin Use FLIR Cameras to Help You?
8/17/2021 (Permalink)
When catastrophe strikes, picking up the pieces, getting things back in order and cleaning up what is left behind can be an overwhelming task.
Throughout the past century, Lufkin and Nacogdoches home and business owners have faced floods, forest fires, tornadoes and hurricanes. When catastrophe strikes, picking up the pieces, getting things back in order and cleaning up what is left behind can be an overwhelming task.
As water damage specialists, we have the experience, expertise, and advanced training that enables us to get your property dried quickly and thoroughly. One of the best tools our SERVPRO of Lufkin/ S. Nacogdoches team uses to assess water damage situations is the FLIR Camera.
- How Does a FLIR (Infrared) Camera Work?
All objects emit infrared energy, known as a heat signature. An infrared camera (also known as a thermal imager) detects and measures the infrared energy of objects. The camera converts that infrared data into an electronic image that shows the apparent surface temperature of the object being measured.
An infrared camera contains an optical system that focuses infrared energy onto a special detector chip (sensor array) that contains thousands of detector pixels arranged in a grid.
Each pixel in the sensor array reacts to the infrared energy focused on it and produces an electronic signal. The camera processor takes the signal from each pixel and applies a mathematical calculation to it to create a color map of the apparent temperature of the object. Each temperature value is assigned a different color. The resulting matrix of colors is sent to memory and to the camera’s display as a temperature picture (thermal image) of that object.
Many infrared cameras also include a visible light camera that automatically captures a standard digital image with each pull of the trigger. By blending these images it is easier to correlate problem areas in your infrared image with the actual equipment or area you are inspecting.
Info from: https://www.fluke.com/en-us/learn/blog/thermal-imaging/how-infrared-cameras-work
- How Does SERVPRO of Lufkin/S. Nacogdoches Use FLIR Imaging?
After a water damage incident, it can be difficult to see just how much area the water has affected with the naked eye. However, with a FLIR camera we can track moisture efficiently. Using the FLIR to detect subtle temperature differences, we then use a moisture meter and locate exactly where the damage is. These handheld tools are an incredible addition to keep the remediation process fast and efficient.

How to Keep Your A/C Cool This Summer in Lufkin
7/2/2021 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Lufkin/S. Nacogdoches is always here to help remediate any water, fire or mold damages that wreak havoc on your home. (936)-559-0404
All of us here at SERVPRO of Lufkin hope you are enjoying the summer break, even with the blistering heat. As we are reaching record highs this season, your AC maybe taking a toll and packing heat from the outside air. AC leaks are quite common and can actually freeze the refrigerant coils due to extreme heat.
Here a few tips to help you enjoy a cool summer this year in Lufkin:
- Turn the AC unit off immediately if you spot frozen evaporator coil until the problem is successfully corrected.
- Replace your Air filter every 30 to 90 days
- Do not Cover any air vents or registers
- For systems that drain by gravity, be sure the condensate is flowing freely to the outside; the drain line (especially the elbow) may be plugged with mold and slime.
- For systems that use a condensate pump, if the pump has failed, that could lead to water backing up in the system and overflowing the pan.
- That the large pan below the cold coil (called the condensate pan) is not rotted and full of holes, and leaking water into the house. Note, that in most cases, replacing the pan below the coil is usually not something a homeowner can tackle. A leaking pan is almost always better repaired by a licensed air conditioning heating ventilation contractor (HVAC).
- Clean the elbowed plug that leads to the condensate pan. You may need to cut and replace the plastic elbow, depending on whether it has slime/mold or not.
- Use a shop vacuum to the end of the condensate drain, if any, and run the vacuum for a few seconds to pull any dried or wet contents out of the line. You need to remove the shop vacuum’s paper air filter to do this.
- For metal Condensate pans, use bleach and water solution to routinely clear you drain line and prevent it from creating mildew.
- Plastic/copper drains can be corroded and damaged. It may easier to use chlorine tablets instead.

Eww, what is that smell?
5/10/2021 (Permalink)
Eww, what is that smell?
Most homeowners and business owners may not realize that they are responsible for the maintenance and repair of their house or sewer lateral – the pipeline between the city sanitary sewer main, usually located under the street, and the building.
The sewer lateral is owned and maintained by the property owner including any part that may extend into the street or public right of way. A cracked or deteriorated lateral or one filled with tree roots can allow groundwater to seep into the system, contributing to the possible sewer backup problems.
Occasionally, the city sewer or municipal drainage system overflows and sends waste water back through the sewage pipe and into your home. An overflow can occur for a number of different reasons, including cracks in the pipe, a surcharge caused by large snowmelt or heavy rains, or a blockage caused by tree roots or plumbing system deterioration, and more.
However, it can also be caused by a blockage in your home’s or business own plumbing system due to a failed sump pump, hair clogs, grease clogs, or any other physical obstruction in the pipes.
If you experience call SERVPRO and we can help 24/7/365.

What are the Main Problems Snowmelt Causes?
5/1/2021 (Permalink)
What Happens When Snow Melts?
How to Prevent Snowmelt Flooding
- Shovel snow away from your home, keeping it away from your foundation. Whenever possible, keep snow 5 feet away from your foundation.
- If your home is on a grade or hill, shovel snow so that it doesn’t roll toward your home when it melts. This ensures melting snow flows away from your home, instead of towards it.
- Clear snow from your roof to prevent excessive buildups. This prevents a significant amount of water flowing through your gutters during a thaw.
- Keep drainage areas around your home clear of snow and ice build-up. This ensures melting snow will drain properly and helps prevent backups.
- Inspect basement walls for cracks. This includes caulking around windows too. Make repairs as necessary to prevent water from entering your basement.
- Check your landscaping before the snow arrives to ensure the ground slopes away from your home. Add additional soil if necessary to help melting snow flow away from your foundation.
- Check your roof for ice and snow build-up. This can lead to ice damages that allow melting snow to enter through your roof.
- Inspect your gutters and downspouts. Clear leaves and other debris regularly during the fall, as this can create blockages. Add downspout extensions to channel melting snow away from your home.
- Check for and clear ice dams hanging from gutters. This places them directly over the perimeter of the home's foundation, meaning that when they melt, they could lead to an increased flooding threat in the basement.
- Test your sump pump during the winter to ensure it works properly when the snow melts. Pour a bucket of water into the sump basin to engage the pump. If it doesn’t turn on, unplug the pump and investigate the issue.
- Never ignore water in your basement. Investigate and repair the source as soon as possible.
- If you have water in your basement or a flood from melting snow, dry and clean the area as quickly as possible.
Snow Damage, In Lufkin??

East Texas winters are not typically known for having the harshest of conditions, however every year serves to be unpredictable.
East Texas winters are not typically known for having the harshest of conditions, however every year serves to be unpredictable. Within the first couple weeks of January this year, we have seen more snow in a 24-hour period than we have in the past few years combined. So, many Lufkin homeowners and businesses are not always prepared for these conditions and the challenges they can present. Because while nice fluffy snow is fun for a little while, it can quickly melt leave your home or business surrounded in water.
Snow can provide a variable amount of water damage issues, especially when the weathers heats up and it begins to melt. In the Lufkin area (and in East Texas in general), trees and foliage are commonly growing near and/or above many houses and businesses. The falling temperature can cause the water inside surrounding trees to freeze, causing the limbs to be much weaker. Having sudden heavy snowfall can put extra weight on some of those trees’ limbs, causing them to fall. A Clean Water Leak in your Deep East Texas Home
8/21/2020 (Permalink)
All water leaks in your home are an issue for mold.
Most concerns over a water leak in your home are about the cleanliness of the water itself. While sewer water or blackwater as is it defined can quickly lead to mold growth in a home, clean water can also lead to dangerous mold growth. Blackwater contains lots of dirty bacteria that can quickly promote mold growth by itself. Clean water can cause mold spores that are naturally present in air, and dust can also lead to mold growth.
The dangers in clean water leading to mold growth are that clean water can easily go unseen in a home due to the lack of odor when compared to black water. Clean water or gray water which is rainwater, can leak into a home’s attic or walls or crawl spaces and linger without being spotted. This water can then lead to mold spores activating and growing in these unseen areas. It’s not until the mold spreads to visible parts of the home or causes a musty odor that it is finally found. By that time, the damage caused by the mold can be quite extensive.
So even if you have a leak in your home that isn't Blackwater give SERVPRO of Lufkin/ S. Nacogdoches a call to get the affected areas dried out to prevent further damage from starting.
An old appliance can cause a water loss in you Lufkin, TX Home.
8/20/2020 (Permalink)
The Deep East Texas Area is surrounded by different bodies of water and heavy rains can cause huge issues for your home. But, sometimes, the worst water loss issues in your home come from inside. An old or aging dishwasher or washing machine can cause massive damage in a short amount of time, leaving your home in a damp state.
Like all things, appliances have a finite lifespan. As frustrating as it is to have to replace one, for the majority of their use, they function as a convenience on our lives. So just as you might see a doctor once or twice a year for a routine visit, so should you have your appliances regularly serviced. Regular service and maintenance can prevent threats to your home, but even still hoses become disconnected, and seals wear out inside of the appliance itself. When these situations occur, high volumes of water could end up in the affected areas and require you to seek…..
From the moment that our experienced SERVPRO of Lufkin/ S. Nacogdoches County professionals get the call, we respond quickly. We understand that the longer water soaks into construction materials, the more irreparable damage that occurs. Once we arrive, we assure that water to the appliance has gotten stopped and assess the full scope of the damage that our team faces in a thorough inspection.
Extraction begins shortly after that with the use of various sump pumps and wet-vacs. Larger pools of water damage could require the use of truck-mounted pumps from our SERVPRO fleet. Once the water has gotten removed from the floors, we set out to thoroughly dry the area, clean it, and deodorize.
The Importance of Flood Damage Safety
8/17/2020 (Permalink)
Never underestimate the power of water.
As Summer rolls along in East Texas and storm season continues, your Lufkin property could become victim to a flood. In the case of a flood or water damage event to your property, you need to call SERVPRO of Lufkin/ S. Nacogdoches County to start restoration work as soon as possible. The quicker we get out to your property the higher the chance that we will be able to restore and save more elements of the damage.
Of course, when things go wrong safety needs to be everyone’s top concern and our highly trained restoration technicians are no different.
If electrical sockets were submerged, they need to be replaced. Even if they were only submerged for a short time this will need to be done. If the electrical sockets have stayed submerged it is unsafe to get into the water even if your power is out. It is generally recommended not to go into the water until the electrical meter has been removed from its socket. This ensures that the home is disconnected from the grid.
Another safety issue with storm floods is the presence of various contaminants. Bacteria, viruses, mold, even feces can hitch a free ride onto the water coming into your home. That level of soil is why it is designated as category 2 water by our industry. Between our process of extraction and the application of an EPA registered disinfectant our technicians minimize the risk of pathogens during the restoration process. Since the air movers we set can aerosolize any remaining contaminants when there are particular health concerns, or a customer requests it we also can place a HEPA grade air filtration device to further protect our customers.
If you experience any storm flooding or are concerned about it, give us a call today at (936) 637-0404 and we would be happy to help.

Professional Water Damage Restoration Services for Lufkin Residents
5/14/2020 (Permalink)
Water damage can leave behind unpleasant odors, SERVPRO has the professional equipment to rid your home of these unwanted smells.
As a property owner in Lufkin, you can struggle to combat the resulting smells after a water damage disaster. You may lack the skills to identify all the sources of the odors. To professionally solve the stress, it is advisable to work with trained restorers who use specialized tools to deal with the problems.
Usually, the wet materials that are left behind after a water damage incident bring about unpleasant odors. That means returning the moisture to normal levels does away with most of the smells. Though that is the case, not all smells completely disappear. That is why service providers like SERVPRO that operate in Lufkin use multiple approaches to mitigate the odors with less chance of returning.
Sometimes a customer can complain of imaginary and real smells; this is when experts from a company like SERVPRO decide to use masking agents. We work by releasing a pleasing scent that covers the bad odors. Absorption and filtration agents can be used to serve the same purpose with the main difference being the manner in which they work. When we use them, absorption of some oils, humidity, and moisture takes place. The restoration process can also make use of pairing agents, disinfectants, sanitizers, as well as electrically generated deodorizers.
Imagined and real odors are the main types of smells that SERVPRO work towards eliminating. Actual substances cause real odors while on the other hand, thoughts of people trigger the psychological or imaginary smells. Irrespective of the situation at hand, our trained professionals are equipped with the right tools and skills to do the needed deodorization.
Drying and water removal are critical when mitigating water damage disasters. Reporting the incidents to our certified professionals at SERVPRO should be done as soon as possible so that the correct restoration procedures can start.

Water Leaks Coming from Inside your Home
5/6/2020 (Permalink)
When you think about residential water damage, you might dream up images of torrential rain or other natural catastrophes. However, the reality, unfortunately, is that damage which is caused when regular appliances in your home stop working properly, this can be just as destructive as a weather event which is severe. Water damage makes up for losses to renters and homeowners in the billions of dollars each year. It is responsible as well for around twenty-five percent of all insurance claims. Water is ten times more likely to damage your home than a fire.
There are fortunately steps you can make to help avoid water damage from appliances and keep your home protected. Understanding some of the common causes of water damage is helpful, and these can include leaking air condition condensation drains, baseboard heating, and failed washing machine hoses, water heaters, and plumbing.
There are not always warning signs offered by these household appliances until the damage has happened already. This is why it is important to check them regularly. The steps below are simple and can help protect your home from the causes of water damage which are most common.
-Know first where your main water supply is in case of an emergency
-If you’re going away for an extended amount of time, shut the water supply off and drain the pipes. If your house has a fire sprinkler system, however, do not turn the water off, and keep enough heat in the home to avoid any freezing up.
-Think about getting your air conditioning system regularly inspected by a professional. The drain lines should be checked annually and clean them out if they get clogged.
-Inspect showers, water heaters, toilets, tubs, dishwashers and sinks annually, and get them repaired if there are any signs of corrosion or leaks. Install water heaters when possible in areas with floor drains to lower damage if leaks do occur.
-Check the caulking around bathtubs, showers, toilet bases and sinks, and if needed make repairs.
-If there is an ice machine or water dispenser on your refrigerator, the hose between the refrigerator and wall should be constructed of braided copper, since this has a greater resistance to corrosion and cracking.
-Check your pipes for leaks and cracks. Have any damage to pipes, have them immediately fixed to avoid repairs in the future that are even more costly.
-Check plumbing fittings and appliance hoses for crimping, breakage or bending.
Sometimes, even after all your precaution, residential water damage can still occur. If this happens to you, call SERVPRO of Lufkin / S. Nacogdoches County today at:(936) 559-0404

The Water Pipes in Your Home
4/9/2020 (Permalink)
Part of avoiding a pipe break at your, Nacogdoches, TX, home may include knowing when your plumbing is making odd noises. Understanding these sounds can help you know what is normal for your home system, as well as which sounds can indicate the danger of a possible pipe burst.
Noises the Pipes May Make
Plumbing systems can make a variety of noises. These may include
1. Rattling
2. Humming
3. Gurgling
4. Hammering
5. Whistling
Each of these sounds is caused by a different aspect of your plumbing system or the water as it moves through the system, meaning that each sound will need to be analyzed and treated appropriately. It’s highly recommended that a professional be contacted if you have concerns about your plumbing.
What These Noises Mean
These noises may not always mean you are at risk for a pipe break. However, they may indicate possible problems that should be looked into. A rattling sound could indicate that a pipe has come loose from its wall fastenings. Gurgling often means that a drain is clogged and may need to be fixed before it causes a backup, while humming may mean that your water pressure is too high. Hammering occurs when the water flow is stopped suddenly forcing it back through the pipes. A whistling sound could be a valve that isn’t fully open.
When To Call a Professional
If you hear these sounds in your plumbing system you may want to contact a plumbing professional to find the exact cause. They should be able to fix broken pipe issues while a water damage restoration service can help with any flood cleanup and repairs to your home.
Understanding the sounds of your plumbing may help you avoid a pipe break. It's a good idea to remember that each sound may indicate a different problem and to contact a professional with any concerns you may have. If you do end up with a pipe burst it’s best to contact a restoration service for cleanup help.
How to Tell if Your Walls are Wet?
3/7/2020 (Permalink)
Water that you cannot see is just as dangerous as the water you can.
SERVPRO uses the right equipment to identify affected materials. SERVPRO will check for the source of moisture in your home or business.
Gypsum, aka “drywall,” is a very popular material for use in the construction of homes and offices. The material is noted for its strong fire-resistant qualities. However, drywall is also known to be incredibly susceptible to being damaged by moisture compared to many other building materials.
This is, in part, because drywall is extremely porous, readily absorbing moisture and retaining it. If the moisture content (%MC) of drywall exceeds even 1%, then the drywall can be considered “moisture-compromised” and in need of either drying or removal depending on whether or not mold has begun to grow.
Even greenboard, the “water-resistant” drywall, will be damaged by moisture if it gets past the green, water-resistant paper covering that gives greenboard its name. The majority of greenboard’s water resistance comes from the paper covering, not the drywall itself.
Because of how susceptible drywall is to becoming damaged by even minute amounts of moisture, it’s important to be able to accurately assess the amount of water present in drywall.
When looking for a moisture meter to use for testing drywall, some considerations include:
- Whether or not the meter has a gypsum scale.
- The range at which the meter detects moisture—the meter should be able to accurately detect very small amounts of moisture.
- Length of the pins.
- Additional scales for other materials—most professionals have to work with more than just drywall, so having a moisture meter with the ability to test other materials using different reading scales is a must.
In many cases, if there is significant moisture in a gypsum board, then there will be obvious external signs of it. For example, a simple visual inspection can be made to spot discolored or visibly crumbling drywall, or a musty odor can indicate a problem with mold growth.

The 3 Categories of Water Damage
12/2/2019 (Permalink)
There are 3 Basic Categories of Water
Category 1 originates from a sanitary source and poses no substantial risk from dermal, ingestion, or inhalation exposure. However, it may not always remain clean after it comes into contact with other surfaces or materials.
Category 2 contains significant contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if contacted or consumed by humans. It may contain potentially unsafe levels of microorganisms or nutrients for microorganisms, as well as other organic or inorganic matter (chemical or biological).
Category 3 is grossly contaminated and may contain pathogenic, toxigenic or other harmful agents. Such water sources may carry silt, organic matter, pesticides, heavy metals, regulated materials, or toxic organic substances.
Time and temperature can also affect the quality of water, thereby changing its category. *Refer to the IICRC S500 for complete definitions.
No one expects pipes to burst, water heaters to break, or toilets and washers to overflow. If this happens, your quick response along with the highly trained specialists from SERVPRO of Lufkin / S. Nacogdoches Countywill limit your damages and potentially save you thousands of dollars!
The Experts and Major Sewer Damage
10/4/2019 (Permalink)
Damage restoration professionals have the experience necessary to handle major sewer damage such as a backup or flooded toilet that affects more than one floor of a building. Learn more about the measures necessary to deal with extensive sewage damage at a commercial property in Deep East Texas.
Assess and Mitigate Damage
As soon as a plumber or sewage company has addressed the cause of damage, a building owner or manager should schedule a consultation with a mitigation and restoration company. Trained professionals can assess damage and take the following measures:
- Pump out standing water
- Remove solid waste
- Determine the extent of damage
Extracting contaminated water and solid waste is the most important mitigation measure. The risk of contamination and mold growth will increase the longer that sewer damage is left standing within a structure.
Tear Out Damaged Building Materials
Porous building materials exposed to contaminated water from a sewer backup will likely need to be torn out and replaced. These materials may include any of the following:
- Ceilings
- Drywall
- Insulation
Extensive damage will probably call for the removal and replacement of some building materials and contents. Tearing out and rebuilding is particularly important if a backup or flooded toilet affects more than one floor of a structure.
Disinfect and Dry the Area
It will be necessary to disinfect areas exposed to contaminated Category Two gray water, which may contain microbes, or Category Three black water containing solid waste. Cleanup should take place after damaged materials and contents have been removed to reduce the risk of recontamination.
A building owner or manager should contact a plumber to clear a clog or a sewage company if the blockage is further down the line or a backup originates in a municipal main in Lufkin, Tx. Restoration can only proceed after the portion of a building that has suffered sewer damage is completely dry.

Mold Growth in Your Carpets
5/7/2019 (Permalink)
Mold in your carpets can lead to more severe issues.
This month, we have been talking about Mold. As a refresher, for mold to grow, it needs oxygen, moisture, a surface to grow on, and a food source. Spores are commonly found in the air. If they land on damp or wet spots indoors, they feed on dust, and mold growth will occur very soon.
In the right conditions, area rugs and wall-to-wall carpeting provide a perfect breeding ground for mold. Carpet located below ground level in basements, as well as carpet that’s been wet for a period of time, and moist or damp carpeting, are at especially high risk of mold growth.
Just because mold is not immediately visible or apparent on carpeting doesn’t mean that growth is not in progress. Actually, mold is likely to only be visible on the surface of carpeting in severe infestations – as would commonly occur when the carpet has remained wet for some time after flooding.
Carpeting that has been subjected to flood damage or standing water usually needs to be disposed of because conditions are ripe for mold growth. Even if visible growth has not yet started, it’s highly probable that it will happen unless the carpeting is removed, cleaned and dried within 24 to 48 hours. Even then, removing it and cleaning it is not guaranteed to prevent mold growth.

Flooding and Staying Safe
4/11/2019 (Permalink)
Deep East Texas is prone to the yearly flood situation and as we have seen with the past few years, hurricanes are always a concern to bring heavy amounts of rain in our direction.
In the event that your home has flooded, it is strictly important to conduct a list of safety checks before returning inside. The Department of Housing and Urban Development has produced an in-depth document outlining these safety steps. Some steps include:
- Checking the roof for dips across the surface
- Checking external walls to determine if they are no longer plum
- Checking the foundation from the outside to see if it has been damaged
- Making sure electricity and gas have been shut off
If flood waters do reach inside your home, they can cause multiple safety hazards and threats. Mold is a real possibility and a valid concern for your personal safety. And if you have an older home, there is also the risk of lead or asbestos contamination. Flood water contains multiple health hazards and just because the visible water is gone, it doesn’t mean the contaminants are no longer a threat.
Checking on your home after a flooding event is, obviously, natural. But even just a few moments of exposure can have significant risks for you health. At SERVPRO of Lufkin/ S. Nacogdoches County, we provide emergency water disaster services for all of Deep East Texas. We have given our mitigation specialists extensive training for safely entering these types of situations and for getting the remediation process started. It is our hope you never have to experience this type of natural disaster or other types of water damages but if you do, we are a phone call away at (936) 559-0404 and are always ready to help.

Be Prepared for the Most Common Forms of Water Damage
6/5/2018 (Permalink)
Water damage usually comes from malfunctioning home appliances, rather than from severe storms and floods.
Nacogdoches County today at: -(936) 559-0404

Cold Winter Weather Could Cause Water Damage to Your Nacogdoches Home
6/1/2018 (Permalink)
This is one the many broken pipes from the freeze.
Most of the time your water pipes are safe from freezing. But if they run through any part of the house that isn't heated, or if the heating system fails, the water inside can turn to ice. When water in a pipe freezes, it expands and puts tremendous pressure on both metal and plastic pipes. In the winter months your pipes are at even higher risk of bursting.
When your Lufkin home has water damage from flooding or leaks, we have the expertise and equipment to properly restore your property. The water removal and water cleanup process is completed by our highly-trained technicians who will document the drying process. This validates that your property has been dried properly and thoroughly.
With SERVPRO you won’t have to worry, even if the worst case scenario happens and your pipes do burst. SERVPRO will be ready as soon as you call us and be there to make it, "Like it never even happened.”
