The Dangers of Flood Damage Without Proper Mitigation

9/30/2024 (Permalink)

Mold damage to the ceiling inside a home Proper mitigation not only saves you from costly repairs but also protects the health and safety of your family.

Flooding in east Texas is one of the most devastating disasters a homeowner can face. When floodwaters invade your home, they don’t just damage the visible areas; they infiltrate walls, flooring, and even your home’s foundation. While cleaning up the water may seem like a big step, without proper mitigation, the problems caused by flooding can worsen over time and lead to significant, long-lasting damage.

Here’s what can happen if flood damage isn’t properly mitigated:

1. Mold Growth

Floodwaters create the perfect environment for mold to thrive. Within 24 to 48 hours, mold can start growing in damp, hidden spaces such as behind walls, under flooring, and in basements. Left untreated, mold not only damages your property but can also lead to health issues.

2. Structural Damage

Water weakens the structural integrity of your home. Wooden beams, drywall, and flooring can absorb water, leading to warping, swelling, and even rot. Over time, this can compromise the stability of your home’s foundation and framework, leading to costly repairs.

3. Electrical Hazards

Floodwaters can affect your home’s electrical systems. Water exposure to wiring, outlets, or appliances creates a risk of short circuits, electrical fires, and shocks. If water-damaged areas aren't properly dried and inspected, it can result in long-term electrical hazards.

4. Decreased Property Value

Homes with unresolved water damage or mold issues often lose value. Prospective buyers are wary of properties with a history of flooding, especially if there’s visible damage or lingering moisture problems. Proper mitigation ensures your home retains its value and is safe for future residents.

5. Lingering Odors

Floodwater often carries dirt, debris, and contaminants that can leave behind unpleasant odors. Without proper drying, cleaning, and deodorization, these odors can persist long after the water is gone, making your home uncomfortable to live in.

The Importance of Professional Mitigation

Proper flood mitigation goes beyond simply removing water. It involves thorough drying, moisture detection, mold prevention, and sanitization to ensure your home is completely restored. At SERVPRO®, we use advanced tools like dehumidifiers, air movers, and moisture meters to make sure every area of your home is dry and safe. We also handle mold remediation and disinfect the affected areas to keep your family healthy and your home intact.

Don’t let flood damage turn into a long-term disaster. Proper mitigation not only saves you from costly repairs but also protects the health and safety of your family. If your home experiences flood damage, contact SERVPRO immediately for professional, effective restoration. We're here to help you make it "Like it never even happened."

mold damage on couch If your business has any mold or water damage, give the pros at SERVPRO of Lufkin/S. Nacogdoches a call at: (936) 559-0404

Discovering you have a mold problem can be a bit overwhelming at first. Before you give up and sell your company, hire a professional to assess the situation.

Warning Signs

It is important to recognize the warning signs of mold before it takes over your home and affects your company.

Smell – Mold has a pungent, musty odor. If it is in one area of your building, you might notice a distinct smell when you enter that part of the property. It is not always visually apparent. Mold can grow behind wallpaper, inside walls and under the carpet. If you notice an unusual and persistent odor in your property, contact a professional in Lufkin, Texas to perform an inspection.

Sight – Watch for the appearance of mold. It may be black, discolored, fuzzy or slimy. You will notice a suspect area growing overtime. Like most fungi, it likes damp areas. Regularly check and clean areas that have a high humidity or tend to collect dampness.

Health – Because mold is not always visible, it may not be apparent that you have a mold problem. If you notice a musty odor when you are at the office or you spot water damaged areas, you may need to hire a mold remediation specialist. If you do have a mold problem, you may notice that you feel better when you are away from home.

Mycotoxins

Organisms of the fungus kingdom, like mold, produce toxic secondary metabolites called mycotoxins.

Things to Know

The best way to prevent mold growth is to control the moisture in your home. Molds can be found almost anywhere and are able to grow on most surfaces, so keeping an eye out for it is essential to keeping you and your employees.

Can your A/C unit cause mold?

8/13/2020 (Permalink)

Two air conditioner units outside. Can my AC cause mold or mildew?

One of the most current questions that we get from Homeowners and Businesses alike is this: Can my AC cause mold or mildew in my area?

In the Lufkin / Nacogdoches area we are accustomed to having the AC unit on one day and the heater on the next; especially because Texas weather is just crazy sometimes.

A properly designed, installed, and maintained air conditioning system shouldn't cause mold or mildew, there are always rare exceptions to the rule but these are the most reported reasons for faulty AC units. However, while an oversize or improperly designed unit can cool your home slightly, it also runs the risk of not removing enough moisture out of the rooms air. Too much moisture in your home can increase the potential for mold growth. Mold spores grow on nearly every surface, we live with mold in the same way we live with bacteria. Just like bacteria though, there are perfect breeding environments that can and do yield a productive crop of molds that spread throughout the home or office setting. At times, these growths are not noticeable until the smell is strong or the appearance has reached an intolerable amount. Improper installation, lack of maintenance, and water drainage issues can also lead to biological growth. If you are someone who runs their AC unit every single day, it is a good rule of thumb to check your unit once every couple months to make sure that all lines are in safe condition, and there are not leaking water marks near the wall or on the adjacent ground.

And as always, if you suspect mold call us your local SERVPRO professionals at 936-637-0404.

Mold Can Grow In Your Carpets

4/22/2020 (Permalink)

Wet and dingy carpets that have mold growing in them. Mold in your carpets can lead to more severe issues.

This week, we have been talking about Mold. As a refresher, for mold to grow, it needs oxygen, moisture, a surface to grow on, and a food source. Spores are commonly found in the air. If they land on damp or wet spots indoors, they feed on dust, and mold growth will occur very soon.

In the right conditions, area rugs and wall-to-wall carpeting provide a perfect breeding ground for mold. Carpet located below ground level in basements, as well as carpet that’s been wet for a period of time, and moist or damp carpeting, are at especially high risk of mold growth.

Just because mold is not immediately visible or apparent on carpeting doesn’t mean that growth is not in progress. Actually, mold is likely to only be visible on the surface of carpeting in severe infestations – as would commonly occur when the carpet has remained wet for some time after flooding.

Carpeting that has been subjected to flood damage or standing water usually needs to be disposed of because conditions are ripe for mold growth. Even if visible growth has not yet started, it’s highly probable that it will happen unless the carpeting is removed, cleaned and dried within 24 to 48 hours. Even then, removing it and cleaning it is not guaranteed to prevent mold growth.

So, when the unexpected strikes SERVPRO will be there to make it, “Like it never even happened.” Call us anytime 24/7 365 (936) 559-0404.

What Exactly is Mold?

6/5/2018 (Permalink)

Though adorable, mold can be deadly.

Mold can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any organic substance, as long as moisture and oxygen are present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, foods, and insulation. Molds reproduce by making spores that usually cannot be seen without magnification. Mold spores waft through the indoor and outdoor air continually. When mold spores land on a damp spot indoors, they may begin growing and digesting whatever they are growing on in order to survive. Molds gradually destroy the things they grow on. Bacteria can start to grow within hours and mold can start to grow within days. Mold spores can lay dormant for years until an ideal growing condition develops, in which they start to flourish. Especially during the summer, the warm humid conditions are a perfect microenvironment for mold growth.

When excessive moisture accumulates in buildings or on building materials, mold growth will often occur—particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or unaddressed. It is impossible to eliminate all molds and mold spores in an indoor environment. However, mold growth can be controlled indoors by controlling the moisture. Many types of molds exist. All molds have the potential to cause serious health effects. Molds can produce allergens that can trigger allergic reactions or even asthma attacks in people allergic to it. Others are known to produce potent toxins and/or irritants. Potential health concerns are an important reason to prevent mold growth and to remediate and clean any existing mold growth indoors. The purpose of mold remediation is to remove the mold to prevent human exposure and damage to building materials and furnishings. It is necessary to clean up mold contamination, not just kill it. Dead mold is still allergenic, and some dead molds are still potentially toxic! Applying the appropriate restoration procedures within the first few hours of a water loss can save thousands of dollars in secondary damage.

Before the growth of mold becomes visible, there will be a faint musty or earthy smell. In time, mold will appear on the outside of the wall as a stain or discoloration. In a standard situation, SERVPRO of Lufkin / S. Nacogdoches County will examine the structure for any visible signs of mold and remove the mold growth and excess spores returning the area back to normal levels. Some situations require the assistance of an Indoor Air Quality/Environmental Professional (IEP) with specialized equipment and services needed to assess and/or repair the structure. IEPs can test and clear a structure for mold by collecting air and surface samples. Then they can determine whether the mold has been successfully decontaminated. We encourage you to call us today if you suspect a mold problem in your home or business. We handle mold remediation work on a daily basis and know when prompt action is required to prevent further mold growth. SERVPRO of Lufkin / S. Nacogdoches County technicians are trained to control microbial problems in structures by promptly drying wet or damp materials according to the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) standards and removing or replacing wet or damp porous materials, like drywall, that have visible mold growth. Call today for an immediate response. We are here to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Mold is not Always Easy to Spot

6/5/2018 (Permalink)

In one Nacogdoches home, mold was growing because of a leak in their ice-maker water line.

One of the most common problems that homeowners face are mold and mildew infestations. This fungus grows on anything and thrives anywhere it can find moisture, especially places that are damp, warm, poorly lit, and poorly ventilated. Not only does it produce a musty, unpleasant odor, but when left unchecked it can cause serious damage.

Mold is not limited to growing in obvious places, it can grow and thrive in the dark corners of your home. In one Nacogdoches home, mold was growing because of a leak in their ice-maker water line. These leaks can be small and hard to notice especially when they are behind walls.

Mold can spread throughout a property in as little as 48 hours. If you suspect you have mold in your Nacogdoches home, you should call us to inspect your home. If mold is found, we have the training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Understanding Mold

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Does Your Lufkin Home Have A Mold Problem?

In Lufkin, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
